First, Diana Nyad attempted her 103 mile Cuba-to-Florida swim again. When she attemped it a month ago, intense asthma stopped her after 60 miles. This time, she made it 82 nautical miles before throwing in the towel (that's 40 hours and 30 minutes in the water, 130,098 strokes). What stopped her this time? Box Jelly stings. Mind you, these aren't normal jellyfish stings. Box jellies are hellacious. They screw up your breathing, cause muscle spasms, and bring numbness to your body. Trust me, I should know. Diana claims she will not attempt the crossing again. But I wonder...a woman with that much grit...will she truly give up?
The second piece of "news" is something that an ESPN anchor tweeted over the weekend. As you probably remember, ESPN got into some trouble awhile back about some comments an anchor made in regards to the Tour de France crash. Well this past weekend, Bill Simmons tweeted: "Thanks to the LA Triathalon for ruining any chance anyone had to drive around the city this morning." His comments drew some fire over at slowtwitch in an article titled "Sniffing jocks inhibits good spelling".
The third piece of news is very exciting: the world marathon record has been broken! Kenya's Patrick Makau (pictured above) beat Hal Gebrselassie's 2008 record (set on the same course) by 21 seconds. His time was 2 hours, 3 minutes and 38 seconds (at a 4:43/mi pace!). Something tells me we may see a human run a sub-2 hour marathon in our lifetime. What do you think?
