The light of my alarm clock illuminates every curve of his body. He looks so peaceful in the pre-dawn darkness. Although I want him first thing in the morning, I know he needs to rest. I quietly sneak off for my run, leaving him alone in the darkness.
When I am at work, all I think about is him. I can't wait to get home. I rush in the door and grab him. I hold on tightly and ride him furiously. My heart races. He responds to every subtle hint I give him. I push harder, he speeds up with little resistance. My body molds to his. We go faster and faster and faster. When we finish, I am exhausted, but buzzing from head to toe.
Of course, you all know I'm talking about my bike, right? (What were YOU thinking, you perv?)
Which leads me to the... Name my Ride CONTEST!
My bike needs a name. I've been racking my brain with a good one, but can't come up with any that matches the bike.
The Rules: Submit your name suggestions in the comments. You can leave as many suggestions as you want. Contest ends Friday, Nov. 13 at 6pm Hawaii time.
I will pick the name I think best fits the bike and the winner will get a FrayedLaces special grab bag full of all kinds of goodies.
Here's some tips to help you with your naming:
- Gotta be a boy's name. Scratch that, a man's name. Because my bike is totally male. And he's damn sexy.
- When I'm on my bike, I feel like a force to be reckoned with. This bike is full of power, yet I wouldn't be scared if I met him in a dark alley.
- My old bike's name was Pele--the Hawaiian goddess of fire. I liked that name, and thought it fit my bike well.

I can't wait to read all your suggestions! Have fun!

Thor
i don't have anything creative for the bike name, just want to say that i am jealous of the beauty. *drool* :)
I'm going with Eros. Hear me out! Greek god whose quality of love extended beyond the (mere?) erotic and well the spiritual. (Sometimes referred to by Romans as 'cupid' but that ridiculous "holiday" does anything but pay appropriate homage.)
From there, it is said, come our concepts of beauty, love, freedom, grace and many other wonderful emotions shared between people.
Plus, it's just a good story - the bit between him and Psyche. Not only this, but your musings on "meeting in the dark", etc., are also important parts of the Eros tale in how Psyche came to see him for the first time.
It fits. If, by chance, I win and you go with Eros, I elect to donate the bag of goodies to a local youth organization of your choosing... and maybe something cool like shoe strings/laces that won't cost much to send to the southeast US :)
Best, JL
How about Fabio?
You had me going for a minute there. Phew! What kind of blog is this anyway?
For some reason, the first name that comes to mind is Lex.
I totally thought that I clicked on the wrong blog there for a minute! : )
you should name it Conan, as in Conan the Barbarian
Kanoa: Hawaiian name meaning "the free one"
Makani: Hawaiian name meaning "wind"
Kuahana - god who kills men
(like you will on your bike!)
Kane-hekili - spirit of thunder (for some reason it felt appropriate given your blog post)
One more:
Ferro ("iron" in italian)
Work your way up the family of Hawaiian deities. Name it Kāne!
My bike is named Sumi since it's short for Sumiyaka (Japanese for speed). Since I'm all about Japanese words, I vote:
kuro: black
an'ya: dark night
Tabi: journey
Good luck!
George Clooney.
How about Axel? It's sound like a strong and fast name to me.
KRATOS (or Cratus) - god of strength, might, power and sovereign rule.
Vincenzo
Tyson
They should always be female, but whatever floats your boat. Here's a few more.
El Demonio (The Demon)
Victor
Stealth (it is a B2 after all)
Mike...Mike The Bike :)
Well, Kevin took my first suggestion.
My second is Hades. I think it really fits the bike's look.
Does "Fu@k, that bike is hot!" work for a name? That's what everyone will be saying....
Magnus - powerful yet gentle.
Zeke
Bond...James Bond 007
No idea on a name....but I think it's great you keep your bike in your bedroom :)
Nothing says sex on wheels to me like a Latin name!
Felipe....(Felipe the Felt??)
Enrique
Juan
Juan Carlos
That's my vote!
Looked these up in my Hawaiian dictionary
ma'lolo--flying fish
mana--authority, power, might
Lars or Sven
I'm going with Fernando.
Fresh Prince!
velocidad or VELO. It's spanish for speed. Afterall, you are doing Ironman Florida.
I'd call it Kane.
Kāne (ka-nay)
The Hawaiian word for male, man or husband.
So I did a bit of homework here; Felt Bikes are named after Jim Felt, a Califonian motorcross rider who rode Japanese bikes. So that lead me down a path, given you are physically located (roughly) halfway to Japan it wasn't a stretch to come up with a Japanese name (rather than a Hawaiian one) so that left me look for some good translation; Ninja was too corny, but I cam up with these two which I think will turn a few heads and serve your purpose
kyuusoku - fast
katsutoshi - to win cleverly
Looking at the pics I think there's room to get it airbrushed on the downtube...anyway just my 2c
Frayed, you're a nut!LOL-
Charlie gets my vote
How about Achilles? Fast and powerful....Brad Pitt played him in the movie....
Lance! He won so many Tours de France that it seems the perfect name for such a powerful & gorgeous bike. Happy riding!
Makani - Hawaiian for strong wind
You should name it Conan, as in Conan O'Brien.
I like the name Fox, cause your bike is a total stud!
sticking with the Hawaiian theme...
Mano - means Passionate lover or shark
You still have Pele right? She'll come in handy in the spring for all the hills you'll be climbing in training :-)
How about Fuego... as in fire because that's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the picture!
Maximus - after Russell Crow's character in Gladiator. Totally sexy, smart and completely bad-ass.
Mojo
Sweet Thunder
Holy crap that is Brutus!
Ajax. The ancient Greek warrior. It's a name I'd use, anyhow.
Apollo.
Just popped into me head.
Since you are getting your PhD in marine biology, Kanaloa - Hawaiian god of the sea
Samson.
Toad.
1. Caymus (after great red wine)
2. Fleury (another wine reference)
4. Thor (come on, you remember the villian turned nice guy in Adventures in Babysitting!)
5. Bruno
I'm calling CRAP on this contest. You posted a picture of some dude riding a bike and you expect me to come up with a name for YOUR bike Nope... this contest sucks and I will be NO part of it!
Chuck Norris
Maui has the power to slow down time. Sounds perfect to me.
I think you should call him "Tawhiri" after the Maori God of Wind and Storms. According to Encyclopedia Mythica, he is "the smiter of trees, the lasher of waves. Nothing is safe from (him), he blows away whatever (he) dislikes". Also, he drove back Tangora, God of the Ocean. This is especially appropriate, given your "love" of swimming. I didn't notice anything in the definitions about "Sweet Ride" or "carbon fiber", but I can adjust the Wikipedia entry if needed ;-P
Best of luck with your IM training!!!
I have several suggestions. In order of preference:
1) Steve
2) The Darkness
3) Caesar
Think about it. You could get all the people talking when you talk about all the time you are spending with Steve. How much you love Steve. That Steve and you are a perfect fit. That Steve sits quietly in your bedroom and doesn't bother you. How you need to clean Steve's bottom bracket. How Steve performed way above expectations or how Steve performed way below expectations. I could go on and on and on.
Dante.
It's such a wicked looking bike, all black and red... I think Dante would be perfect.
According to the dictionary, Dante wrote The Divine Comedy, an epic poem that describes a spiritual journey through Hell and Purgatory and finally to Paradise. That about sums up an Ironman race, right? You're going to go through a lot of pain and suffering at some point, but in the end, crossing the finish line will be heaven.
Fire
Tanto
Kanye (LOL)
I know I'm late on this, but I had to get my heart rate down after that opening paragraph.. Jeez, I was at work! ;)
Just looking at the bike, I think Pele is the perfect name for it. How about Pele 2, in a Simpsons homage? (Snowball 2...)
I'm not sticking to the Hawaiian theme, but given your description of your awesome new ride, I think "McSteamy" would be totally appropriate.
I really like the one with all the wine references. Here's what I got...
Mc Turbo (or something else clever with Mc is front of it)
Edward (if you've read Twilight, you'll understand... don't mess with in the dark)
and lastly Chinook (total badass of the Salmon species)
He looks like a "Lucho (Loo-cho)" or "Cassius"
Felts are fabulous!! :D
"Black Betty"
... ram a lam...
Why does the bike automatically have to be masculine?!
Spike--for fun!
Albern--Of Noble Valor
Ambrose--Immortal
Amery--Industrious
Ambrose--Immortal
Arthur, Art--Champion, Follower of Thor
Burton--Fortress
Cadman--Warrior
Chatwin--Warlike Friend
Maxx Power!
Here's a list of ideas. It's OK to laugh.
Bruiser
Brock
Mace - like the spice or the spray, (plus the bike is red and black)
Mahon - tough Irish name, means bear
Marco - hot guy name, also God of War
Storm - too X-Men-ish?
Good luck choosing a name!
I know I'm too late for an official entry, but I vote for "Rocco" - strong and sexy :-)
