Whirlwind

Ugh, here I go again...slipping off into blogging oblivion. A week has passed---what have I been up to?

Well, as soon as my heel problem seemed to get better, I went and hurt myself again. I scalpeled my calf with a shard of glass--all the way down to the delicious looking subcutaneous layer. Because the skin was so taut, it spread wide open and was proving to be a pain in the neck. I MacGyvered some stitches using some tape, and thought I would be okay for my run the next day. Wrong. "Stitches" popped somewhere around mile 3 and I oozed blood the rest of the way home. Awesome.

The next day I did a better job with my adhesion skills and was raring to go for a run, especially after I came home to these:

The New Brooks Launch and Ravennas! I decided to take out the Launch, but didn't get far. With each step the fascia in my right foot was giving me this weird plucking sensation. I remember feeling it a few days ago on the beach when I went snorkeling. Immediately I thought plantar fasciitis and freaked out. I went home and sent an SOS text message to the Lam. Even though it was midnight his time, he discussed things with me and decided that it would be okay to run. I opted to continue in the more supportive Ravennas, which instantly made things better. I went on to run a smoking impromptu 5 mile tempo run, and was glowing the rest of the night.

Throw in another power washing session, some upper body strength training, and a killer swim session, and my upper body was trashed by Tuesday. I had some relatives come in and I gave them a whirlwind tour of the island, which totally exhausted me. Wednesday I did some essential cross training of eating pizza from the couch and went to bed at 7:30. This morning was my usual beachside trainer power session on the bike. I was supposed to throw in a swim or run this evening, but am swamped with work. I also think I may be getting sick, because I am exhausted all the time---can't seem to get enough sleep.

Plan is to go for an easy run tomorrow, a swim or spin in the PM, and then a long run Saturday. We will see how that all goes. Things are insane right now because I am about to take off for 6 weeks! I am going to a tiny island in the San Juans for work-related material. No biking or swimming---that's totally out of the question. How am I going to manage keeping up my fitness for six weeks?

Well, I am going to run as much as my schedule allows (even if it means lots of small circles), and I bought some stretch cords so I can strengthen my swimming muscles at night. I am brining my yoga DVDs, and will be doing a series of squats, lunges, and step-ups to try to keep my cycling muscles from atrophying. This will all be one heck of a challenge--but I'm trying to be optimistic!

Blogging may be at a minimum when I'm gone, but I will do my best to keep you guys up to date. I promise not to fall off the radar too horribly!

The Brooks sneakers are awesome! Have a great trip. Six weeks is a long time, but I am sure you'll be busy and you'll find a way to workout!

I've been feeling extra tired lately too. Not sure what is going on with that, but I could sleep for hours.

Wow girl sounds like you've had a ton going on. Have fun while you're away and good luck fitting the workouts in. Don't beat yourself up too much though if you can't get in as many as you'd like. Working out while on travel is tough!

You taped up your leg...? Wow, you are very hard core and a very determined runner! I once fell on my knees and got a couple of bruises and whimped out of running for a few days, haha!
Those new sneakers are awesome; great vibrant colors!
6 weeks is a long time... I think if you can fit in a couple of walks, and a couple of 20 minute circuit style training sessions a week, I don't think you will loose too much fitness.

Nice shoes! Love the dig deep detail, and the shocking colors.

You're quite the studette with the "It's only a flesh wound, pass the duct tape" mentality . . . I think you'll do fine with the 6 weeks of travel. Good luck!

Unlike you, whose favorite running candy is Motrin, ( Ibuprofen ) mine are sleep aids Tryptophan, Melatonin, Valerian, and Dyphenhydramine. ( Benadryl )

Perhaps you should make sleep your number one priority and then go ape during your uptime.

I think I may have plantar fasciitis as well, so I totally understand the flip-out. but new shoes also seem to be helping.

enjoy the *work* trip.

Those shoes are awesome. I love Brooks, and love those ones. Love the shoelaces too. (Dig Deep is one of the lines in the US Army Ranger running cadence from which I take the title of my blog and listen to when I run. Awesomeness all the way around.
