Cliches R Us

Yesterday I decided to test out the heel with a spin on my indoor trainer. I loosened up the straps a bit, and managed to get a respectable ride in with minimal pain. I know I said I was going to be smart and let it rest for a few days, but I just couldn't sit there and watch the Tour de France from my couch. I HAD to get on my bike to watch it.

After yesterday's successful bike, I thought I would test out a run in the am. Here's my morning timeline and internal dialogue:

6am: start run. "Crap. crap crap crap. This hurts like hell"
6:05am: back at home "well, at least I made it .5 miles"
6:06am: "Gotta do something....might as well do yoga"
6:45am: "Yoga's done...why do I still feel antsy?"
7:00am: "Oh, I can go for a swim after I run this errand" (packs bag with swim gear)
7:30am (halfway across island, while in car...) "Ugh...I don't want to swim. I really want to run....why can't I just be able to run without shoes?
7:31 am: "DUH! You live in Hawaii.....go run on the beach!"

Usually I try to avoid running on the beach, since it's such a friggin cliche. But like a junkie, I had to get my fix. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Fortunately, since I am so lazy efficient, I didn't change out of my running shorts or sports bra from my morning run attempt. (I'm a grad student, remember? We have different definitions of clean than the rest of the population) Unfortunately, I was wearing a cotton tee on top, and I just don't run in cotton. I decided to bite the bullet and do something I absolutely abhor: running in just a sports bra. On top of everything, it was a pink sports bra.

So, my apologies to anyone on Kailua beach this morning. Yes, I was that stupid cliche bobbing down the beach in a pink bra. And until my heel swelling goes down, I will continue to be a cliche.

Now, if you'll excuse me...I have a tour to watch and a trainer that is calling my name.

We watch the tour at work everyday (i work in a restaurant) and it makes me want to run food from table to table. Literally, RUN. It's TOO inspiring some times :) And I cliche beach run all the time. It's too darn pretty not too!

You never know how long you will live in paradise. Why not be a cliche once in a while. Sounds like fun to me.

I hope the heel feels better soon.

Hope your heel stops swelling so you can be a non-cliche hard-core runner again! hey, at least you weren't in a red one-piece suit.... haha. I haven't ran on the beach in a while... You just inspired me to go give it another shot!
Have fun on your trailer watching the tour!

sounds like a fun cliche to me...

also, I'm no longer a grad student and still think that I have a different definition of clean

I've made the poor people at the grocery store deal with my less than fresh post-run aroma lately. There's just so many hours in a day...the shower happens, eventually!
Get better!

First off if I lived near a beach I would be all over it running with or without shoes. AND if you run on the beach, you don't have to apologize for wearing a sports bra, after all it is the beach!
PS awesome blog! :)

I don't think you should have to feel weird about running barefoot on the beach, but I can totally feel where you're coming from. Cuz you know that if there are any other triathletes/runners who happen to see you, they're thinking, "Oh, she's one of *those*" and you want to let them know (somehow) that you're *NOT* one of those runners! You're a real runner with races and medals and injuries and strange compulsions and everything!

It's like not wanting to be mistaken for a tourist.

You got the run in, that's what counts.

GIRL... stay off that foot! Even Maggs is taking it easy. EVEN MAGGS! You are forcing me to fb mock you daily if you continue. RECOVER!! <3 you.

Sorry to hear about the heel still being painful.

Still, the beach run sounds pretty awesome. Then again, it would to anyone who - due to lack of good weather - only sees the beach in stormy and rainy conditions.

Sounds like a good run! Take care of that heel!

lol. well i'm jealous! :)

anddd lately i live in sports bras, it definitely makes the transition from anything-to-run much more efficient!

hope your heel feels better soon!

I am so jealous that you have a trainer to ride your bike on while watching the tour. I am still trainer-less but I am crossing my fingers for next year's tour. Go Team Astana!

First off... you suck because you can run on the beach anytime you want in HAWAII!!! Second off... I thought I was the only girl out there that abhorred the sports bra running too! LOL! Good to know I'm not the only girl out there that TRIES to keep it classy... but alas, desperate times call for desperate measures!

Hope you the heel feels better soon!

Hi there! New runner and reader to your blog. Thanks!

Whatever it takes to get the run in. Maybe you should get a tattoo on your back: "Serious athlete." That will keep people from thinking you're just some fluffy beach runner. :)

I think I'd be running on the beach every day if I lived there!

You do what ya gotta do... I think being a cliche is just fine for a time like this! Hope the heel swelling resolves itself sooner than later. I've always hated running on the beach, but that's just because I hate sand. :)

to see the very best in clichés take a run through a major university's campus during summer; its all there, sports bra (sans beach) running, clearly out of shape frat dudes running shirts in hands, old townies rubbernecking. priceless. hope the heal gets better.

I'm glad you were able to get something in despite the heel even if it was cliche running on the beach loL!

LOL! I don't like running in just a sports bra either. Sometimes it's necessary b/c it's so freakin' hot out. I am sure people enjoyed the view.

I never run with a shirt on! (wait, just a sports bra to be clear - even in the winter time in Nor Cal) And I live in the suburbs/city! Should I worry? LOL!
Let the heel heal, and enjoy the Tour from the couch...your heal will thank you in a couple of days. :)

I'm surprised you never run in just your sports bra. You're a REAL runner and don't look like a poser like some of us. The only time I ever ran in just a sports bra was on a trail run in the canyon behind my house because I thought I wouldn't see anyone(I thought it would be cool and it wasn't and I had a long sleeve top on).

Cliches are good sometimes. Don't you ever do touristy things just because you can? You should!

I hope your heel feels better soon.

omg what are you thinking...pink!

I feel your pain, literally. I am experiencing heel pain, I cannot stay inactive, I have to run....especially when I watch the TOUR each morning.....hope neither of us gets MORE injured.

I love cliches. I too hate running in a sports bra, but that hasn't happened since I stopped drinking. Take it easy with that heel. If Maggs can take it easy so can you. And you DO NOT want D to FB mock you - it is horrifying.

Amanda said...

At least you got your run in, pink bra and all. I like running on the beach here in Charleston because in the summer it's the coolest/breeziest place.

Cindy said...

not a bad cliche. all you needed was some music and a slo-mo shot! hope you have a quick recovery!

Maggs said...

Pssst....don't tell anyone, but I really am not taking it easy :-) But that's just because the hot cyclist wanted to do Tantalus repeats last night after I already killed myself on the trainer in the AM.

Glad your foot is better.

Is running in a bra cliche? Or only if it's pink?

Irish Cream said...

I always get to a point each summer where I finally give in and strip down to just the sports bra. I've yet to do it yet . . . but give it time; it will happen! Hopefully it won't be a pink sports bra when it happens though ;)

Way to get creative, and find a way to get that run in! Hope the heel heals up soon!

As long as you weren't humming "eye of the tiger" to yourself, I think you're safe. If nothing else, you could probably dip your heel in the ocean afterwards and cool it off (a bit - even if the water is something crazy like 80 degrees)

I can honestly say I've never run in a sports bra! :)
