Back update

After 72 hours of no relief, I started to worry. Visions of ol Ramus and his stress fracture began to creep in my head, and I started mentally preparing myself to go to Boston and cheer on my friends. I wanted to go see the original sports medicine doc who helped me during the injury, but since it is a holiday everything is closed. At the urging of the Distraction, I decided to go visit his friend who is a PT. I just got back, and here is her diagnosis.

Apparently my sacrum is out of alignment and tilted towards my left. This is putting tremendous strain on my piriformis muscle, which is then pressing on my sciatic nerve. Hence the occasional burning sensation I get.

She tried to ease it back into alignment, but couldn't get it perfectly back. I have some movements/stretches to do several times a day, and the Distraction is on piriformis duty. Since I leave for Boston on Tuesday, I decided that I will try to do this all weekend, and if there is no relief I will see a doc on Monday. Fingers crossed!

  3. Consider a chiropractor! But there are good and bad ones, so ask around to other runners you know that have had positive experiences. Good luck! Can't wait to hear how Boston goes!

  4. I had a tilted sacrum a few years ago. It was dreadfully painful at night while I slept.

It took a couple tries of realignment to get it to stay. They eventually did the "high velocity" alignment, which ended up keeping it there. It took a few weeks for the soreness to go away, since the misalignment had been going on for a while. No problems since then.

Hopefully all work out for you. Do your exercises and get your rest.

  5. Keep working on it! "The distraction is on piriformis duty" riiight, did he "volunteer" for that? Well good for him. Stay positive, do your exercises and have a good Easter-type holiday!

Sounds like the distraction is a great guy.

  7. I agree with Zach. I am from a family of five chiropractors. They can work wonders and a tilted sacrum is pretty routine. Good luck.

  10. I "think" I had a similar issue just before my first 13.1...the muscles that are supposed to keep my leg in the socket were weak, so the leg was descending out of the socket. It caused my pelvis to tilt in its vertical place, and pinched a nerve on the lower right part of my back (does this sound familiar?). Anyway, after some quick tricks to get the leg back in and get the pain to go away, I did PT/strengthening, and haven't had problems since. I hope the outcome is as simple for you! Take it easy. Even if you have to run/walk Boston, you'll BE THERE. That's something that a lot of us will never be able to do, so just enjoy the experience. Set a PR some other time. ;-)
    Sending healing thoughts your way....

  24. I really hope you can work everything out in time for Boston (it's a great experience). You're arriving in plenty of time to see a doctor there too (of needed).

You're smart to go early, I'm flying in on Sunday morning and flying home Monday night (not too bright)..

    Best of luck!

  25. I'm sure hoping you get to perform in the Boston, but that is very generous of you to be going there come hell or high water and be willing to cheer on, and support the running crowd regardless.

  28. Good luck! I have the same issue with my right side. Unfortunately for me, it comes back. They said it is because of me having children and the right side not returning to normal. I will offer you this bit of encouragement. As soon as they do get it back in place, the pain will go away very quickly, or at least it does for me every time. Once it is back in place, I'm my old self again. Good luck! I'm sure it will all go well!!!
