Baby got Back

Pain, that is. Yesterday I was 2 miles into an easy 7 miler when I started feeling pain in my lower back. It's exactly where I tend to cramp immediately post-marathon. I debated turning my run into a 5 miler and head home, but decided to go on.

Bad Move.

At mile 5 I was hit with a sharp pain that stopped me dead in my tracks. I tried stretching and going on, but couldn't. I could slowly manage a limpy walk and made the humiliating trek home---the longest 2 miles of my life.

I iced it, I stretched it, I have been popping Advil like a person on Intervention, and I still limp. No biking this morning. No swimming tonight. No running tomorrow. Now is not the time to push it.

I did some tests for sciatica, and those came out in the clear, so I am pretty sure it is a severe muscle pull. I read that tight hamstrings make you more prone to back problems, and since I had a minor hamstring pull last week I am confident that is what did me in. All I can do for now is wait.

And complain.

On a brighter note, have any of you noticed me on Runners Lounge lately? A few weeks ago they asked me to start doing videos for them. Check it out at Runners Lounge Live

  26. Immediate sharp pain? Does not sound like muscle to me...maybe some facet joint nipping, followed by protective muscle guarding...? I hear the best thing to do might be cat/cow/dog yoga type mobility work. Pelvic tilts, easy. Masking the pain w Advil may not make the root problem go away, careful.

Are there any Myoskeletal Alignment Therapist in you area? They focus on muscle and joints...

  27. A few years ago I had severe back pain and it was due to tight hamstrings. The one thing that helped the most was lying on my back and bringing my knees to my chest. (You can do this with one or both legs) Hope this helps and your back gets better!

  28. Several years ago, I had a chiropracter who gave me this sage bit of treatment, and it works EVERY time.

You need 55 minutes of uninterrupted time for this.

Start off with 10 minutes of heat.
Follow with 5 minutes of ice.
Repeat 2 more times, then end with 10 minutes of heat.
    (10-5-10-5-10-5-10=55)

I swear, I have been plagued since my early 20s with back/neck pain, and this tx has saved me many times.

    Feel better!!!

  32. Hope you get well soon. Have you tried massage? That seems to get the aches and pains out for me.

  35. Yeah, it seems like they always try to pull the rug out from under us runners right when it is approaching an important race day.

As far as the Runner's Lounge, I just bypass that and go straight to your Frayed Laces
    YouTube channel.

I mean, after all, why would I want to bother watching a video unless you are in it?

  36. Ack! Heal up girl! Hello?? Boston?!?!

  37. Good luck w/ the injury! Maybe things would feel better if you didn't allow Sir Mixalot to ride on your butt while you ran. I'm sure that's throwing things out of whack! :)
