Free Swag Product Review: Pearl Izumi

Being a running blogger has its benefits. The ability to connect with like minded people all over the world, access to a wealth of knowledge from other runners, being able to babble incessantly in my writing (and have you guys actually care to read this)....but of course, the single most important benefit is free swag.

At the Las Vegas marathon expo, I started chatting with some of the folks at the Pearl Izumi tent. I tried on some shoes and they tried to convince me to buy them. I tried to convince them to give them to me for free (repeatedly). At first, they thought I was rather annoying, but after I dropped the blog-bomb on them I piqued their interest. My timing was perfect, as they were in the process of monitoring running blogs for potential product reviews. Apparently they took a liking to my blog, and right around Christmas time sent me the Pearl Izumi Streak Racing Shoe (which I found out that for a few weeks I was the only person in the US to own a pair in that cool blue color) and the Tri Fly II triathlon cycling shoe. I posted a review of these shoes here.

Just a few weeks ago I hit the motherload of free swag. I was sent 3 triathlon outfits, three cycling shorts, three cycling jerseys, the awesome Chipotle racing set (bib shorts and cycling jersey), another pair of Streaks (in a size that fits better) and the neutral cushion shoe the Pearl Izumi Synchrofloat III.

Apparently I died and went to heaven.

Since I purchased my first bike trainer last week (with tremendous thanks to Maggs!) I was able to get some action shots in my new gear.

Oh, and I quickly learned one benefit of cycling on an indoor trainer: your hydration possibilities are endless. (Note to readers: I do not recommend cycling under the influence)

This week I tested out the Synchrofloat IIIs. Runners World reviewed them in their spring guide here. When I first put them on, I could definitely tell they were more firm and structured than my Mizuno Wave Riders or even my Mizuno Wave Creations. They were a little too firm for my short runs, but man do I wish I had taken these puppies on my road 40 miler this past weekend. As I've mentioned before, I need a little more stability when I do longer runs. I used to use my Mizuno Wave Creations for that, but when I did the two marathons a week apart in December the plastic plate in the mizuno's caused me to have some soft tissue injury to my foot (see report here). The Pearl Izumi Synchrofloat's are more stable than the mizuno's, and they don't have the plastic plating. You can bet that my next road ultra will be in these shoes. Of course, like all Pearl Izumi shoes they have the integrated seamless uppers with the lace locking technology, so you can get these shoes to fit like a glove and won't get any blisters or hot spots from the seams.

So, thank you thank you Pearl Izumi! Because as I've mentioned a million times before, a girl can never have too many (running) shoes.

Nice! I'll have to keep something like that in mind in the future.

I've gotta say, I love the hydration idea.. the options are truly endless. No more gin & tonics in a Camelbak for me! :)

Haha, I LOVE all of these pictures... especially the ones with the wine. Awesome score on all the free stuff.

Biking with wine or g & t = falling off the trainer (but you would still be smiling). Yeah, a little jealous of the swag - don't hesitate to rub it in a little though. Good work!

You are a lucky lucky girl!

Not sure what would be wrong with cycling under the influence - you made it look so fun!

Holy heel lift, girl! Watch out for that.

awesome! I just posted about my Pearl Izumi's last week! I got a sweet deal on them, however, they weren't free LOL. Nice gear!

NICE!! If you get too many freebies, feel free to send some my way! :-)

Once again, I think people would pay me NOT to mention their stuff on my blog ;)

Those pics are amazingly hilarious, by the way. I've often wondered if I should put wine in my water bottle...

I just bought the same bike at the end of last season and haven't gotten a chance to ride it yet. How do you like your bike?

Susan said...

Wow! Awesome about the free stuff! I don't think cycling under the influence would be too terrible, as long as you're on the trainer and not on the road!

Going out shoes, on the other hand, are lame.

Which is why you will always see me at the club in my most recently retired pair of running shoes. I have a feeling by that picture that I'm not the only one who does that ;-)

Great collection of swag! You have played excellent Jedi tricks on the minds of the Pearl Izumi people.

Btw, it's not just the girls that cannot have enough (running) shoes ;-)

Have a great weekend!

I think we have the same trainer...did you get the super secret double agent trainer deal from BikeSport Michigan??

That really is like heaven! What a haul.

I wish Nebraska sold more Izumis since they sound like something I'd like.

Everyone I know reads your blog, so I'm adding you to my reader...I just read through some of your past posts and I can see why everyone reads!

I love the wine pic...I'm sure this is something I would have thought of if I rode on a trainer =). My friend Gazelle's would probably have a martini in hand!

I've had one item sent to me for a review...I welcome more =). As you said, a girl can't have too many running shoes (or socks, shorts, tights, tanks...).

I think you should have your blog name permanently changed to Stylin' Laces with all those new shoes and swag you got. I don't see any frayed laces in all of those shoes you got...

mmeehh...then again, maybe I'm not training you hard enough? =P

Nice swag!! :) Oooh boy, I may have to try playing the blog card at race expos from now on . . . why have I never thought of doing that? You, my dear, are brilliant!

Interesting. I've honestly never even considered any iZumi shoes before. Glad to hear that you liked them.

What was the best part? I feel like I could use more stability in general..... Hmmm, got me thinking!

PS. Yay free swag!

I sent you an email with my contact info for your auntie. I did send one last month too when you asked for it so check your spam - they might have landed in there.

Love all the shoes, and the pictures! Lucky you with all the free stuff.

Nice... that is the mother load!

I wish I'd had more time to visit with people at the Las Vegas Marathon expo this year. I just ran through really fast to get my bib number, shirt & goodie bag. Then it was off to work in the Garmin booth, since I was volunteering on behalf of our local Fleet Feet store.

I like that some of the bigger players are getting on board with blogger reviews though. I love reviewing products and I love reading others' reviews... far more than the usual advertisements or the small blurb (probably paid for) in magazine articles!

lucky girl! I love Pearl Izumi shorts - they fit the tall girl.

Wine during training! Why hadn't I thought of that!?!?!

I have a pair of PI's that I got free when I led a marathon training group. They were a little too stiff for my liking for longer runs, but I love going to the gym/walking around town in them.

I love your yellow ones!

Maggs said...

Awesome you got some shoes that fit. Do you like the tri shorts? I find them uncomfy. Sucks because they sent me a bunch of them too. Nice bike kit. It matches your bike...which is WAY important.

Vava said...

Nice post, and nice snag on the swag! I hope that someday some nice company will drop a pair of men's 12.5s on me to test...

Ted said...

Gosh, I worry about you especially on the bike trainer. What if that bike trainer falls apart and you going into the wall with a glass of wine? That wouldn't be too pretty. I think the most upsetting part would be trying to remove the wine stain off the wall.

Spike said...

Nice free swag! But why an indoor trainer, don't you already live on the greatest island on Earth? Unless, of course, you are worried about drinking and cycling in public.

Carolina John said...

that's really cool swag! nice stuff.

Nice PI contacted me also (not sure if you put a good word in, thanks if you did) but you're clearly in their good books!
