They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes, so what does this say about me? The other day (per roommate's request) I was doing a little cleaning by gathering my mass pile of shoes at our door. As I picked up shoe after shoe, I began to realize I may have a problem. All of these shoes are currently in my rotation.
Top Row (L to R): Asics Trail Running Shoes (for trails, duh); Mizuno Wave Creation 9's for long distance (>10 miles); Mizuno Wave Rider 12's for mid-distance.
Bottom Row: Pearl Izumi Streak (racing flats) for Tempo and Intervals, Mizuno Wave Creation 8's with lace locks for Triathlons, Pearl Izumi Tri Fly II cycling shoes (for Triathlons) and Shimano cycling shoes (for long rides).
You don't even want to know how many retired shoes I have sucking space in my closet.
I am very proud of my latest additions to the FrayedLaces footwear fanclub: Pearl Izumi Streak running shoes and my Pearl Izumi Tri Fly II. I ran into the folks at Pearl Izumi at the Las Vegas Marathon expo, and began to talk story with them. I admitted that I hadn't really tested out their shoes because when I tried them on it felt like I was wearing nothing and that kind of freaked me out. They convinced me to give them a try, so they sent me these two shoes to test out. They both arrived Christmas Eve, and I opened the packages with glee:

As much as I wanted to take my fast-looking, rocket-blue Streaks out for a test run the day I received them, I decided to wait. I promised myself that this shoes would be reserved for speedwork days only. Not only would running consistently in racing flats put me at risk for injury, I also needed a little extra motivation to get me out the door on speedwork days, since they are usually the training days I dread the most. I have now done two speedwork days in them: One was a tempo run that I did hungover and still blasted at 20 secs/mi under goal pace, and another was a mile repeat track workout in which I ran the fastest mile of my life and ran 36 seconds/mile faster than goal pace. These shoes rock! They feel like basically nothing, and they have seamless uppers plus an integrated lacing system that make the shoes fit your feet like a glove without any risk of hot spots from seams. They do run a little small, as it warns on the website, and I really should have asked for half a size larger. Other than that, I am 100% sold on these shoes. If you haven't given Pearl Izumi a try, I suggest you do! Go to your local running store and take em for a test run. You'll be glad you did!

I also am a big fan of the Tri Fly II cycling shoes. My current cycling shoes are not meant for Triathlons, and there is an additional buckle that is awkward and adds seconds in the transition time (you triathletes know every second is precious in the transition zone). The Tri Fly IIs have two straps, and they are both designed to be easy to fasten and designed not to slip out of their metal buckle. The heel of the shoe also has a strap so you can quickly pull the shoes onto bare feet. I tested these shoes on my bare feet and they survived a 30 mile test ride. I recently took them out on a longer ride and they performed just as well with socks. After I break these in a bit more, I plan on doing the majority of my training rides in them with bare feet in preparation for my Honu half Ironman in May.
A big thanks to Pearl Izumi! You have certainly changed my mind about your products.
Have a great weekend everyone!
So, there's someone else who dreads tempo runs and track intervals? It's so easy to convince myself to stay in bed on those days. Maybe I need shiny new shoes (yeah, right, like I'm going to spend the money on shoes for 1 day a week).
ReplyDeleteThose are some smokin' shoes. Pays to share your story with people, literally. Way to go on the speed work. Those times should be good motivation for additional speed workouts. Way to go.
ReplyDeleteTHAT's the right kind of shoe fetish to have.
ReplyDeleteOooh, those Pearl Izumi Streak shoes look SWEET!! I think I need me some more shoes!
ReplyDeleteI almost feel guilty throwing old running shoes away, my closet is lacking space due to all of them. I like the rocket-blue Streaks!
ReplyDeleteHey, have you run the Hilo marathon? We are moving to Kauai the beginning of Feb. and I am planning to run Hilo...I am so excited to get away from snow and into the sand! Is it easier to run at sea level?
Have a great weekend!
Must have more shoes...
ReplyDeleteI like the rocket blue ones. The ones they gave me in Kona were putrid ugly yellow :-( But they are still FAST :-)
ReplyDeleteI ordered the trainers today...should be here by the end of next week. I'll email you the total.
One (man or woman) can never own too many shoes - no matter if they are running or other shoes. Great collection you have there. Very curious about the Pearl Izumis.
ReplyDeleteI am planning on running the Kauai marathon...I am going to try to do all the HI marathons this year. (too bad I will miss the 2 this month)
ReplyDeleteYour shoe pic made me laugh, but I currently ahve 4 pairs of the exact same shoe in my closet (3 colors, 2 are the same) because I love them so much I'm starting to stash them away like a squirrel and his acorns. Two are in rotation, two are still in their boxes waiting for their day. And the not so funny thing. I keep looking for these on sale. I think I'd buy another 2 pair if the price was right. LOL
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are all sweet! Do you really wear racing flats for tempo and interval runs??
ReplyDeleteI'm printing out your pic for when my husband wonders how I could possibly be rotating through three pairs.
ReplyDeleteI love those blue shoes!
ReplyDeleteyour tri fly shoes are gorgeous! did you put some kind of gator thingy on your asics trails? i wore mine out the other day and my feet got soaked. well, i'm inspired by your rotation of awesome shoes. looking at pics of other people's running gear is total runner's porn!
ReplyDeleteNice shiny blue shoes. They look great! I've been doing all my runs in the same Brooks. Maybe that's my problem. Yeah, blame the shoes ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review!
You have inspired me to buy another pair of running shoes. Mine looked lonely...
ReplyDeleteI think I might have to go shoe shopping :-)
ReplyDeletethe streaks are BEAUTIFUL!!!!! wow, all those sneaks work for you?! i am running in a single sneaker (have 2 pairs at least but will need new shoes soon) b/c every single sneaker i try tears up the back of my heel where my achilles is,... BOO!!!! i need a closet of sneakers!! haha.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, chica . . . .I don't think I could ever part with my Nikes. BUT I will say they're very pretty ;D (what a girl thing to say :P)
ReplyDeleteGreat review ;D
I enjoyed reading your blog. Nice collection of shoes too. Good luck in Boston this year. I'm training for Boston too in Anchorage, Alaska. I've started a blog. Check it out. http://www.roadtoboston2009.blogspot.com Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shoe review. Would you were the Pearl's for a marathon or just shorter races?
ReplyDeleteScrew how effective they seem to be, they are ADORABLE! I love the light blue. :o)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the shiny blue shoes. Makes me want to go shopping!
ReplyDeleteGreat review of the Pearl Izumi. I have be wondering about them. I'm gonna have to check them out. Oh, and my closet looks the same. Matt is always making me clear out my old sneakers.
ReplyDeleteThose new kicks are HOT!
ReplyDeleteGod those shoes look sexy!
ReplyDeleteI have developed a shoe fetish myself since I started running. I was telling someone else that no matter how hot a runner looks, the first place my eyes go is to their shoes... lol
Interesting product review. I must try out Pearl Izumi.
ReplyDeleteThats cool that they sent you those shoes to try out. They make some pretty good shoes.
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of new shoes in the morning!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I bet I'd like pearl izumi shoes. I'm trying to find shoes that are super minimal. I hate it when shoes try to force my feet into doing things they don't want to do.
ReplyDeleteJust so you know, I would probably do a little happy dance if you reviewed the pearl izumi's on my site...I'm somewhat lacking in reviews of that brand :)
Happy dance! :)
And I thought my wife had a lot of shoes...wow...( ;
ReplyDeleteYou're giving Carrie Bradshaw a run for her money.
ReplyDeleteMmmm... shoes... me likey.
ReplyDeleteAnd way to go on getting some SWAG! I wish I could do that!
